Coventry Train Station

Creating a welcoming arrival point for a City of Culture…

As part of major new development of Coventry Train Station, Sam supported the team to manage a range of artist commissions in both the existing Grade II listed station and the new station building and surrounding public realm.

Navigating the complexities of creating public art for a train station…

Working with Coventry City Council in the lead up to Coventry City of Culture, Sam worked on behalf of Creative Giants to engage the local art community and support the planning and development of a range of new public artworks to ready the city for its year of celebration.

For the station, Sam led on the delivery stages of the station commissions. This included preparation and delivery of all associated permissions, consulting with the rail operator, the local conservation officer and Network Rail engineers.

The commissions included supporting two local, Charis Esther & Luisa Freita on a large scale community engagement activity during COVID to create a welcome sign for the new station building. For the Grade II listed station, Sam oversaw the development & installation of a 120 sqm window vinyl by artist Christopher Tipping, and a series of complimentary bus shelters. As well as an architectural sculpture in an internal courtyard, and bespoke parklet for outside the station which Sam contributed to as a designer.
