Fabula un Facto. Play is in the Making.

Fabula un Facto. Play is in the Making.

Developed during an Art in Manufacturing Residency for the National Festival of Making, Fabula un Facto is a playful installation that emulates industrial architecture. Inspired by both the culture and the physical environment of the Cardboard Box Company. Scroll down to learn more.

Inspired by the visual language of the factory floor, and the creativity and innovation that exists, often unseen, in the production industry, Sam worked with the CBC to create an immersive installation.

What is it?

The installation intends to evoke a sense of wonder; What is it? How does it work? What does it do? Rather than a linear narrative, it offers an explorative experience that invites you to consider the possibility that, even if you don’t really understand something, you can still be in awe of it.

Audiences were invited to step inside the fun-house machine, complete with lighting effects, mirror illusions, smoke and motorised kinetic elements. During the festival weekend, visitors were also treated to surprise aerial circus performances by Sam Williams and Lucy Kenward.

A playful structure, with passive interactive elements – it is both factory and machine. An immersive representation of the infinite nature of human innovation and a joyful reminder that play is, indeed, in the making.

From November 2023 to June 2024, Sam was artist-in-residence at The Cardboard Box Company, Accrington.

Part of the National Festival of Making’s Art in Manufacturing programme, she was invited to develop a new piece of work in response to her experience at the factory.
